An artificial neural network based neutron–gamma discrimination and pile-up rejection framework for the BC-501 liquid scintillation detector
نویسنده
چکیده
BC-501 is a liquid scintillation detector sensitive to both neutrons and gamma rays. As these produce slightly different signals in the detector, they can be discriminated based on their pulse shape (Pulse Shape Discrimination, PSD). This paper reports on results obtained with several PSD techniques and compares them with a method based on artificial neural networks (NN) developed for this application. Results indicated a large performance advantage of NN especially in the region of small deposited energy which typically contains the majority of the events. NN were also applied for discrimination of pile-up events with good results. This framework can be implemented on some of the most recent programmable data acquisition cards and it is suitable for real-time application. & 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A first comparison has been made between the pulse-shape discrimination characteristics of a novel He-based pressurized scintillation detector and a NE-213 liquid-scintillator reference detector using an Am/Be mixed-field neutron and gamma-ray source and a high-resolution scintillation-pulse digitizer. In particular, the capabilities of the two fast neutron detectors to discriminate between neu...

The BC-523A detector is a boron-10-loaded liquid scintillation detector that is sensitive to not only fast neutrons and gamma rays, but also to thermal neutrons. This detector has recently attracted the attention of several researchers and has shown promise for neutron spectroscopy. Several efforts have been made to accurately characterize this detector for several neutron and gamma-ray energie...
متن کاملPulse-shape Discrimination for Identification of Neutron Sources Using the Bc-501a Liquid Scintillator
Fast and accurate identification of neutron sources is very important in nuclear nonproliferation and international safeguards applications. Commonly, the identification of neutron spectra relies on unfolding procedures, which requires the solution of an ill-posed problem. In this paper, we present a new application of an existing technique, which can be used for neutron source identification w...
متن کاملA Compton-Suppressed Phoswich Detector for Gamma Spectroscopy
A phoswich detector with two scintillation layers has been designed and assembled at Oregon State University. This detector is able to identify and reject Compton events and ultimately reduce the Compton continuum in gamma energy spectra. In this detector, CsI(Tl) crystal is used to primarily detect photoelectric events. The CsI(Tl) crystal is partially surrounded by a BGO crystal layer to capt...
متن کاملDigital pulse-shape discrimination of fast neutrons and γ rays
Discrimination of the detection of fast neutrons and γ rays in a liquid scintillator detector has been investigated using digital pulse-processing techniques. An experimental setup with a 252Cf source, a BC-501 liquid scintillator detector, and a BaF2 detector was used to collect waveforms with a 100 Ms/s, 14 bit sampling ADC. Three identical ADC’s were combined to increase the sampling frequen...
